Fort Barrington

A short, steep climb from Deep Bay beach takes you up Goat Hill to this fort at the western mouth of St. John's Harbour, comfortably under an hour to the top. What survives is a circular battery, a small powder magazine and the barracks, built in 1779 on the site of older batteries and named after Admiral Samuel Barrington. It guarded the harbour entrance together with Fort James on the opposite side. From the top you look straight down onto Deep Bay, and the beach is there for a swim on the way back.
