Fort James

Cannons still point out to sea from Fort James, on the headland at the northern side of the entrance to St. John's Harbour, just outside town. Work began in 1706 and most of what stands dates from 1739, built out of fear of a French invasion and named after King James II. In 1773 it carried 36 guns and barracks for 75 men, and in the 19th century a gun fired salutes to visiting warships and signals at sunrise and sunset. The walls, a powder magazine and about ten cannons remain, looking back across the harbour to town.
