Sportfishing charter

Day trip · Los Cabos, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas has one of the biggest charter fleets in Mexico, and the boats go out from this marina. The fish come because the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez meet off the cape, and the rich water holds blue and striped marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, wahoo and, closer in, roosterfish. Something is biting all year, and the season for each species varies, so ask the boat what is running that month.

A panga (an open skiff) goes out for about five hours. A 26 to 30 foot cruiser makes an eight-hour day, and the yachts of 34 to 60 feet and more cost several times that. What is included changes from boat to boat: the fuller packages cover licences, bait, tackle, ice, lunch and beer, so check before agreeing a rate. Many resorts book charters for guests. October is tournament month, with Bisbee's Black and Blue and the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament filling the marina.
