Excellence Playa Mujeres vs Secrets Moxché Playa del Carmen

Honeymooners in their thirties who want a swim-up or club-level suite and are torn between beach and pools compare these two. Excellence is the dependable, repeat-guest resort on Playa Mujeres' sheltered sand; Moxche is the 2022 Secrets north of Playa del Carmen built around pools, cenotes and a late night.

What Real Travelers Say

Distilled from real traveler discussions and reviews for each resort.

Excellence Playa Mujeres

What travelers love

  • +Repeat visitors are the norm, and many travelers have been three to six times with staff who remember them by name across years
  • +Beautiful white sand beach inside the gated Playa Mujeres community, sheltered by Isla Mujeres just offshore, and consistently described as some of the cleanest sand near Cancun
  • +Seven pools totaling 55,500 square feet, five of them heated in winter, plus a lazy river, four hot water Jacuzzis beside the pools and five pool-integrated whirlpools
  • +Eleven dining venues on the all-inclusive plan, including Chez Isabelle for French, Basmati for contemporary Indian, The Lobster House, The Grill steakhouse and a takeaway wood-oven pizza window, with eleven bars pouring premium pours
  • +Dinner reservations are not required anywhere except the Teppanyaki tables at Spice, and there are no wristbands, so you walk in and eat

Common complaints

  • −Suites have been getting refreshed building by building through 2026 according to guest reports, with no published schedule or completion date, so an unrenovated suite still shows its age and a building under active work can mean daytime noise. Ask which buildings are finished when you book
  • −The open-concept bathroom has a frosted glass partition that does not fully cover the doorway, so privacy from the bedroom is limited
  • −Air conditioning struggles with the humidity in some suites, which stay cold but feel sticky and musty
  • −Long-time repeat guests say food quality has slipped over the years, and it is solid all-inclusive cooking rather than a destination for eating
  • −The ground-floor swim-up suites open onto a private deck with a strip of lawn between you and the water, so it is not the step-straight-in layout the name suggests

Secrets Moxché Playa del Carmen

What travelers love

  • +Eight pools, each with its own look and crowd, plus three man-made cenotes built into the property. The cenotes are the thing almost no other all-inclusive on this coast has, and they are the most distinctive feature here after the pool count itself.
  • +Eleven restaurants and eight bars with no reservations required. Bisou is a AAA Four Diamond French room, Suki does pan-Asian with a 12-seat omakase table and teppanyaki, Allora is Italian with a wine cellar, Ember is a smokehouse, Bamboo is Thai, Dos Almas covers Mexican with a taco bar and tequila and mezcal tasting, and Coco Cafe runs 24 hours.
  • +Gypsy, a hidden nightclub that needs a daily password to get in, open 10:30pm to 1am, with Dark Horse also running to 1am. A real late-night scene is rare across the Secrets properties and this is the best of them.
  • +Cocktails are a strength, not a weakness. Current guest reviews single them out as well balanced rather than watered down, with the mango margarita, pina colada, Miami Vice and Bahama Mama named most often.
  • +Modern design with dense planting that breaks the resort into zones, so each pool and building feels like its own place rather than one big deck. It opened in October 2022 and the finishes still look new.

Common complaints

  • −This is a pool-first resort and the beach is not why people book. The white sand, waiter service and non-motorised water sports are all real, and guests do name the beachfront as a highlight, but with eight pools and three cenotes competing for your day the shoreline is the part that gets skipped.
  • −Dinner runs on a buzzer, not a booking. The standard restaurants are first come first served, and if you show up at 7pm or later the wait runs 25 to 60 minutes. Eat at 6pm or after 9pm and the problem disappears.
  • −Check-in is the weak point in the arrival experience and can drag past 40 minutes even with Preferred status.
  • −At peak occupancy the bars get visibly understaffed and drink waits stretch, which is the complaint that shows up most consistently when the resort is full.
  • −Housekeeping is the soft spot in the worst recent reviews, including a late September 2026 stay that reported dirty rooms across several days. It is not the norm here, but it is the failure mode to raise with the front desk immediately rather than at checkout.

The Verdict

Beach or pools, quiet or late. Excellence has the sheltered Playa Mujeres sand, seven pools with a lazy river, and nine restaurants with reservations only for teppanyaki, but nights end at the piano bar, some suites still show their age, and the main pool underwhelmed one couple. Moxche's eight pools and three swimmable cenotes are the area's best by most accounts, Gypsy runs to 1am, the swim-outs are more private than most, and the kitchen draws praise. The trade is a beach nobody books Moxche for, sargassum included, a 25-to-60-minute buzzer wait at prime dinner time, and a higher rate. Beach-first couples wanting a dependable week take Excellence; pool people who want a dance floor take Moxche.

Choose Excellence Playa Mujeres if…

The sheltered beach is the point, you'd rather walk into dinner than hold a buzzer, and a rooftop plunge-pool suite tempts you.
