Glow worm cruise

Day trip · Turks and Caicos · runs a few nights after each full moon

For about 20 minutes, on the third, fourth and fifth evenings after a full moon, the shallow water south of Provo flickers green. The light comes from glowworms (Bermuda fireworms), tiny marine worms that spend their lives on the sea floor and rise to the surface to spawn, the females releasing a glowing protein with their eggs. The show peaks around 55 minutes after sunset on a falling tide.

Because of that timing, glowworm cruises run on only two or three nights a month. Boats head for the channels beside the wetlands and the Caicos Banks, such as Leeward Going Through Channel, and most combine the trip with a sunset cruise. Shared trips on sailboats and catamarans usually pour rum punch, Turk's Head beer and soft drinks; private boats cater to order. Wind, weather, tide and the moon all play a part, and a sighting is never guaranteed, so pick a captain who knows where to be. If your dates miss the window, sheltered spots like Heaving Down Rock and West Harbour Bluff sometimes show a few from shore.
