Semi-submarine reef tour

Day trip · Turks and Caicos

No mask or swimming needed. The Undersea Explorer leaves from Turtle Cove Marina in central Provo, and once it reaches the reef you go down from the deck into an air-conditioned cabin where every seat has its own window, about 1.5 metres below the surface.

The route stays inside the bay off Turtle Cove and Babalua Beach, over patch reefs such as Smith's Reef that sit in 2.4 to 5 metres of water among seagrass, so the ride out is short and the water fairly sheltered. Through the glass come parrotfish, blue tangs, angelfish, snappers and grunts, with stingrays, eagle rays, nurse sharks and green and hawksbill turtles some days. It is the reef trip for small children and anyone who can't or won't snorkel. The clear-bottom boats at Mangrove Cay are a different outing, gliding over shallow mangrove channels rather than the reef.
