Iguana Island and Half Moon Bay boat trip

Day trip · Turks and Caicos

Little Water Cay sits less than 500 metres off Provo's Leeward shore, and it belongs to the Turks and Caicos rock iguana. Boats tie up at a small dock and you walk loop boardwalks through dry scrub with National Trust guides on hand, iguanas lounging close by. Feeding them is illegal (food from tourists has killed some), and so is touching them or stepping off the trail.

Next door, Half Moon Bay is a 1.2 km sandbar beach between Little Water Cay and Water Cay, with open sea on the north side and a shallow, sheltered lagoon on the south where baby lemon sharks sometimes cruise. The shared half-day trips that pair the two take about four hours, morning or afternoon, and usually add a snorkel stop at a reef such as Leeward Reef, with a beach hour or two at Half Moon Bay. Snorkel gear, snacks and rum punch (often only after snorkelling) are normally included; bring your own towel. Pickup is from Grace Bay Beach or the marinas at Leeward and Turtle Cove.

The boat sets the mood. Power catamarans tend to play loud music, some with a slide or diving board, and lean towards adults. Sailboats are quieter and better with kids.
