Luminous Lagoon night boat tour

After dark, every stroke of the propeller lights up blue. The lagoon at Falmouth, where the Martha Brae River runs into the sea, is full of microscopic organisms that glow when the water is disturbed, so the wake shines, fish leave streaks of light as they dart past, and rain makes the whole surface sparkle.

The boats go out from sunset and the trip lasts 45 minutes to an hour. The water is only one to two and a half metres deep, and anyone who wants to can climb in and swim, glowing as they splash, so pack a swimsuit and a towel. Many people come late in the afternoon and eat at the restaurant on the lagoon first. The glow is weaker in some weather.
