Martha Brae rafting

Day trip · Montego Bay, Jamaica

Martha Brae rafting

This is the slow one. You sit two to a 30-foot bamboo raft while a licensed captain poles it down three miles of the Martha Brae, a green, limestone-clear river in Trelawny, and the float takes about an hour and a quarter. Captains talk about the river and the plants along it, and some stop for a swim.

It starts at Rafter's Village, with Miss Martha's Herb Garden of Jamaican medicinal plants, a Tarzan swing, a jerk shop and a gift shop. Dress to get wet, shoes included. Children must be at least six, and there is a weight limit per rider. Locals tell a Taino legend about Spanish gold still hidden in a cave along the banks. It makes a daytime pair with the Luminous Lagoon, which lies where the same river meets the sea.
