Perobas natural pools boat trip

The speedboats leave from Perobas beach in Touros, but the reef they head for, about 15 minutes offshore, belongs to neighbouring Rio do Fogo, which is why the same trip is sold under both names. At low tide the coral forms warm, shallow pools full of fish; the water can be knee-deep when you arrive and up to your waist two hours later as the tide comes back.

It runs only on the lowest tides (0.5 or less on the Natal tide table is what to look for), so the date matters more than the weather. Snorkel gear is normally included, but the reef is too shallow for scuba. Expect about two hours in the water with no shade, toilets or changing area, only canoes selling beer, drinks and grilled skewers, so bring a hat and plenty of sun cream. The boat ride is bumpy, worth knowing for anyone with a bad back. The shallow, calm water makes this an easy outing with small children, and the restaurants on Perobas beach have showers and lockers for afterwards.
