Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point surf boat trip

Day trip · Costa Rica

This is a surf trip, not a sightseeing cruise. Witch's Rock (Roca Bruja) breaks off Playa Naranjo inside Santa Rosa National Park: a beach break on a long sandbar laid down by the river mouth, with lefts and rights, few closeouts and the rock itself standing offshore. It holds size well and gets hollow on a good swell. Deeper into the park, Ollie's Point is a long right-hand point over sand and cobbles that switches on with a solid south swell. It is named after Oliver North, for an old airstrip nearby. Both waves featured in The Endless Summer II.

The land route is a mud track for serious 4x4s, so nearly everyone comes by boat, from Playas del Coco or on surf-camp trips out of Tamarindo. Boats leave early for the light morning wind and work around the tide, and a day runs anywhere from half to full. Ollie's is no place to learn to stand up. Crocodiles are often seen toward the Naranjo river mouth.
