Xoxi Cancún

An evening, not a park, and called Xoximilco until its rename. Groups board brightly painted trajineras, the flat boats of Xochimilco, and are poled along a set of canals for about three hours while dinner comes round in courses of dishes from different regions of Mexico. The open bar pours beer, tequila, rum and vodka, plus soft drinks and aguas frescas.

Bands play from the banks and from passing boats: mariachi, norteño, marimba and village brass. A host on each boat runs games and tells the stories behind the food, and masked wrestlers turn up for a dance number. Check-in opens at 7 in the evening, the last boat leaves at 8:30 and it ends at 11, Tuesday to Saturday. Long trousers help against the mosquitoes, and any repellent you bring must be biodegradable.
