Family Varadero
Family Varadero, formerly Selectum Family Resort Varadero, is a 567-room all-inclusive at Km 130 of the Vía Blanca at the entrance to the Hicacos peninsula, 20 km from Varadero's airport. It has had three names in a decade: it opened as Memories Varadero under Canada's Blue Diamond, became Selectum Family Resort Varadero in 2023 when Turkey's ATG Hotels (owned by the tour operator Anex) took over management, and lost that name on 4 June 2026, when ATG terminated all its management and marketing contracts with the owner, Grupo de Turismo Gaviota, one day before the US deadline for foreign companies to cut ties with GAESA. Since then it has been sold under the plain name Family Varadero by the Cuba-specialist channels (booktocuba, cubatravelsclub, Hola Sun) and run on the Cuban state side rather than by a foreign brand.

Pros
- +Built for families: three pools including a separate children's pool, a mini club for ages 5 to 12 (9am to 5pm) and a teen club for 13 to 17, per Hola Sun's 2026 sheet, a more complete age split than most Varadero resorts offer
- +Wide dining spread for the price: a buffet, three a la carte restaurants (Cuban, Italian and Chinese, with La Caleta named by booktocuba), a 24-hour snack bar and five bars including the Duna Beach Bar and a jazz bar
- +The shortest transfer of any big Varadero resort: 20 km, about 20 minutes, from Juan Gualberto Gómez airport, which matters when you are landing with small children
- +Cheap for what it is: Cuba-specialist resellers quote about US$112 a night for a double all-inclusive in November 2026, with one child aged 3 to 12 free until 21 December and US$28 a night after that
- +Newer than the 1990s stock along the strip: it opened as Memories Varadero and was relaunched in 2023, so rooms (king or two twins, minibar, safe, coffee maker, balcony or terrace on ocean-view rooms) and public areas are modern by Cuban standards
- +Varadero remains the best-connected base in Cuba: Gaviota Tours said in October 2026 it is running private and shared transfers between Havana, Varadero and the international airports this winter, and Havana is a 140 km day trip
Cons
- −The beach entry is rocky, with 10 to 15 feet of rock before swimmable depth; water shoes are effectively mandatory and small children do better in the pools
- −The service record is a blank page: ATG ended its Selectum management on 4 June 2026 and the hotel is now run on the Cuban state side, and no guest report from after the handover had surfaced by early November 2026, so the warm, well-drilled team praised in 2024 and 2025 cannot be assumed
- −No Visa or Mastercard from any country has worked in Cuba since 6 June 2026, so bring cash for the whole trip, including the paid extras (Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, spa, massage, hair salon, medical service)
- −Nationwide power cuts continue and the resort depends on generators, so air conditioning and hot water can drop out; air conditioning reliability was already a complaint in some rooms before 2026
- −Canadian flights and packages are suspended: Air Canada, WestJet/Sunwing and Air Transat all stopped Cuba in 2026 with no restart date, so you arrive via Havana or a non-Canadian carrier and book the hotel through a Cuba specialist rather than a package
- −Long buffet lines and mixed food quality were the main complaints under Selectum, and Cuba's 2026 supply shortages make variety less likely, not more; expect repetition over a week
- −At 567 rooms the property is big enough that wayfinding takes a day, and the old selectumvaradero.com website is dead (it returns a 404), so there is no official page to check facilities or send questions to; everything goes through resellers
The physical product is unchanged and is the reason to consider it: three pools including a separate children's pool, a mini club for ages 5 to 12 and a teen club for 13 to 17, a buffet plus Cuban, Italian and Chinese a la carte restaurants, a 24-hour snack bar, five bars, a gym and tennis. The beach is the weak point, with a rocky entry that makes water shoes essential and pushes most families to the pools. What has changed is everything around the building: Selectum's programmes, website and Turkish-trained management are gone, the staff now work for the Cuban state side, and no guest account from after the June 2026 handover had surfaced by early November 2026, so treat service quality as unknown rather than assuming the enthusiastic team of 2024 and 2025 is intact. The island-wide caveats apply in full: no Visa or Mastercard from any country has worked in Cuba since 6 June 2026, so this is a cash trip; the national grid fails daily and the hotel runs on generators; and with Air Canada, WestJet/Sunwing and Air Transat all suspended, you fly in via Havana or on a non-Canadian carrier.
It makes sense for budget-minded families who want a modern, well-equipped Varadero base, accept pool swimming over ocean swimming, and are comfortable booking through a Cuba specialist with no brand standing behind the stay. At about US$112 a night for a double all-inclusive in November 2026, with one child aged 3 to 12 free until 21 December, it is priced beside Oasis Varadero (the former Grand Aston, from about US$110) and under Playa Vista Azul (from about US$117), both sold through the same resellers, while the Spanish-run names along Las Américas are a moving target since Iberostar left 12 of its 18 Cuban hotels and Meliá 15 of its 34 in June 2026. If you need a known quantity in service, wait for post-handover guest reports; if price and facilities are what matter, this is one of the cheapest big family resorts still open in Varadero.
