Couples Resorts vs Excellence Resorts

Honeymooners and anniversary couples shopping Jamaica land on this pair constantly, usually as Couples Negril or Swept Away against Excellence Oyster Bay, often with Excellence's Mexico and Dominican resorts in the mix. Couples is four Jamaican, couples-only resorts with no room tiers, where scuba diving and a catamaran cruise are in the rate. Excellence is six adults-only resorts built around walk-in dining, swim-up and rooftop suites, and an Excellence Club upgrade that changes what you get.

Where They Differ

Who they are for

Couples means it literally: 18-plus pairs only, so nearly everyone at the four Jamaican resorts is in a relationship with the person next to them, and travelers describe couples-only places as quieter and more intimate, with no friend groups or bachelor parties. Excellence is adults-only, not couples-only. In practice it skews heavily to couples, with honeymoon and anniversary signs on doors at Riviera Cancun, yet mother-daughter trips, solo travelers and small friend groups all report feeling at home, and Playa Mujeres draws more non-couples than Riviera Cancun. One guest at Excellence Punta Cana found the lower rate pulled in more groups and less romance.

What the rate covers

Couples wins this outright. Scuba diving is in the rate at Tower Isle, Negril and Swept Away, two dives a day at Negril, and most all-inclusives charge $100 or more for that. Add the daily catamaran cruise, snorkeling, windsurfing, Swept Away's ten-acre tennis and fitness complex, the Dunn's River Falls trip from Tower Isle, and top-shelf liquor at Tower Isle's bars. Two caveats: Swept Away's rate bakes in that sports complex even if you never pick up a racquet, and room service there is continental breakfast only. Excellence charges for more than a first read suggests: spa treatments, scuba with instruction, deep-sea fishing and yacht trips all cost extra; only non-motorized water sports are in the base rate. The free airport transfer needs a suite-only stay of three nights or more booked direct; packages and third-party bookings pay for it.

Dining and reservations

Excellence's signature is walk-in dinner: eight to fifteen restaurants per resort, and usually only the teppanyaki table at Spice takes a booking. The same French, Indian, Italian, steak, lobster and Asian rooms repeat across the chain. The complaints are about drift: Punta Cana regulars say menus have been trimmed, Playa Mujeres regulars say quality has slipped, Carmen's portions run small, and at Coral Playa Mujeres club guests call the food fantastic while everyone else calls it decent. Couples runs four to six restaurants and cooks Jamaican. Swept Away's grill does jerk chicken, patties and a snapper sandwich on coco bread with vegetables from its own gardens, Tower Isle's buffet gets called the best at any all-inclusive, while Couples Negril's food splits first-timers from regulars and Sans Souci shuts every restaurant two nights a week for a lawn gala dinner.

Rooms

Excellence has the fancier rooms. Entry-level suites at Riviera Cancun start at 668 square feet, and the chain's swim-up, plunge-pool and rooftop terrace suites are the draw; Coral Playa Mujeres opened in 2025 with nothing worn yet. Not all of it is new: Playa Mujeres is mid-refresh, Riviera Cancun reads as dated beside it, and Oyster Bay's older blocks draw maintenance complaints. Couples has no swim-up rooms, no private pools beyond Tower Isle's plunge-pool category, and no tiers, so every guest gets the whole resort, and all four properties get called dated, with dim corridors at Tower Isle and a hurricane-patched roof at Negril. The exceptions are the higher-end rooms at Sans Souci and Tower Isle and Swept Away's beachfront veranda suites; skip Swept Away's Great House rooms, which sit over a restaurant and a club.

The Excellence Club

Excellence sells a resort within the resort. At Punta Cana two of four pools and two of four jacuzzis are Club-only; at Riviera Cancun the Club gates the Magna restaurant, a private beach, heated private pools, the lounge and one hydrotherapy treatment per person; at Coral Playa Mujeres, Club guests get beach concierges, dedicated pool servers and a speakeasy, and rate the food a tier above what everyone else gets. Skip the upgrade and the resort visibly shrinks. Couples has none of this: one rate, one resort, which a travel agent who sends most clients there calls one of the reasons.

Beaches and where they are

Choose Couples for the beach only if you choose Negril. Swept Away sits on Seven Mile Beach, which its regulars call unmatched, and Couples Negril has a calm, shaded, protected bay with gentler water than Seven Mile. The Ocho Rios pair is a different story: Tower Isle's sand has eroded, which the resort acknowledges, and Sans Souci's beach is small and rocky. Excellence's beaches swing just as widely. Playa Mujeres has sheltered white sand that guests prefer over Riviera Cancun's, where the water can run brown and sargassum hits hard in season; the Dominican resorts face the open Atlantic, with strong surf some days and heavy sargassum in season; Oyster Bay's beach is narrow with little snorkeling, though its pools beat Couples Negril's. Riviera Cancun is 20 minutes from the airport; Oyster Bay and the Dominican resorts are remote.

Service, vibe and evenings

Tower Isle is one of Jamaica's original resorts, still Jamaican-run, and the chain gets described as authentic Caribbean luxury with no glitz. Staff tenures run ten to twenty years at Couples Negril, returning guests get greeted by name, and the airport bus doubles as a social hour with a drink stop. Excellence feels more upscale and more typical of an all-inclusive, modern in setting and in its definition of luxury, with no timeshare pitch. Loyalty runs deep too: Playa Mujeres regulars have been three to six times and are remembered. Oyster Bay is the outlier, with service described as competent rather than warm and reports of theft and unannounced room entry that other guests dispute. Neither brand does nightlife. Couples wraps up by 10 pm; Excellence by 11, and Carmen Punta Cana's nightclub drew six people one night.

The Verdict

Guests who've done both split this by priority, not quality. If you want a beach you'll remember, one all-in price and nothing roped off, the Negril Couples resorts are the stronger pick, and a travel agent familiar with both sends most clients there; accept dated rooms, a long transfer and early nights. If you want a swim-up or rooftop suite, eight to fifteen walk-in restaurants and a modern resort, Excellence wins, with Playa Mujeres the property guests most often prefer; budget for the Excellence Club, because outside it the resort shrinks. In Jamaica, Oyster Bay runs well above the Couples rates and is the Excellence its regulars rank last, so the Jamaica-only choice tilts toward Couples. In Mexico or the Dominican Republic, Couples isn't an option, and the Dominican Excellences usually run below any Couples rate.

Choose Couples Resorts if…

Pick Couples if the beach, included scuba and excursions, and a couples-only crowd matter more than modern suites, and you'll stay in Negril.

Choose Excellence Resorts if…

Pick Excellence if you want a swim-up or rooftop suite, walk-in dining at every restaurant, and a modern resort over a dated one with more included.

Couples Resorts or Excellence Resorts: Common Questions

Is a couples-only resort really different from an adults-only one?

Yes, and the difference is who's there rather than any Valentine's theme. At Couples everyone is half of a pair, so the mood is quieter and more intimate, and travelers who want no friend groups or bachelor parties pick it for exactly that reason. Excellence is adults-only but mostly couples anyway, just a bit livelier, with the occasional friend group or parent-and-adult-child pairing. Neither is a lifestyle resort.

Which has the better beach, Couples Negril or Excellence Oyster Bay?

Couples Negril, and guests who've looked at both don't argue the point. Negril's beach is a calm, shaded, protected bay, while Oyster Bay's is narrow, with little sand before the water starts and no real snorkeling, diving or boat activity; the Club-level beach there is fine but nothing like Negril. Oyster Bay wins on pools, with a quiet side of the main pool and a rooftop pool that's usually empty.

Does Couples have swim-up or private-pool rooms?

Not swim-up, no. Swept Away and Couples Negril have no private-pool or swim-up option at all; the upgrades there are beachfront rooms and suites, and Swept Away's beachfront veranda suites are the ones guests recommend. Tower Isle is the exception, with plunge-pool rooms and villas listed. Excellence has plunge-pool, swim-up and rooftop terrace suites at its Mexican and Dominican resorts, and plunge-pool rooms and villas at Oyster Bay.

Is the drive to Negril a big deal?

It's 90 minutes to two hours from Montego Bay, and it's the most common reason people hesitate on Couples Negril and Swept Away. Regulars say it isn't a problem: the bus is full of other Couples guests, the driver talks about the island and stops for a drink, and a 13-minute helicopter transfer exists for those who hate road time. If the transfer is a dealbreaker, Excellence Riviera Cancun is about 20 minutes from Cancun's airport, though Oyster Bay and the Dominican properties are remote in their own right.

Which brand has the better food?

Excellence, on most accounts, with the caveat that its own regulars say it's slipping. Excellence regulars put its food above the all-inclusive average, and the walk-in format means you actually get to every restaurant, but long-time visitors report trimmed menus at Punta Cana, slipping quality at Playa Mujeres and small portions at Carmen, and one Punta Cana guest found daytime drinks watered down. Couples is the better bet for Jamaican cooking and for the bar: Tower Isle pours top-shelf brands and its buffet gets called the best at any all-inclusive, and Swept Away grows its own vegetables, though Couples Negril's buffet disappoints first-timers expecting fine dining.
