Excellence Resorts vs Sandals Resorts

Two groups end up weighing these chains: Sandals regulars wondering whether the premium still buys anything, and Excellence regulars eyeing a Sandals island for a change. Sandals is the couples-only original, fourteen resorts across eight Caribbean islands with butlers at the top end and scuba in the rate. Excellence is six adults-only, all-suite resorts in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica that fold room service, in-room liquor and walk-in dining into the lowest room category.

Excellence Resorts

The adults-only flagship brand of The Excellence Collection, which also runs Finest (family) and Beloved (boutique).

Where They Differ

Who they are for

Both chains are adults-only, but Sandals goes a step further: every resort is couples-only, so there are no friend groups or solo travelers at the pool. Excellence takes anyone 18 and over and draws couples, groups of friends and repeat visitors who have been three to six times. Energy varies more by resort than by brand: guests who have done both call Sandals the quieter chain, and Excellence Playa Mujeres has a reputation for being louder than its siblings, yet Excellence Punta Cana is dead by 11 PM, Oyster Bay runs no loud late programming, and Sandals Saint Vincent's pool music gets called louder than its romance marketing suggests.

What the base rate includes

Owners who switched from Sandals to Excellence list the same things: 24-hour room service, three bottles of liquor plus wine and champagne in the suite, swim-up access and no upselling, all in Excellence's lowest room category. At Sandals, room service is a club or butler-level perk, Grande Antigua guests note the in-room liquor arrives in opened bottles refilled daily, and Halcyon includes only basic Wi-Fi. Sandals answers with the water. Certified divers get up to two free tank dives a day at Grenada, including the Bianca C wreck, Royal Curacao runs resort dives with no certification, and one owner who dives twice daily valued that at roughly $800 a trip. At Excellence only non-motorized watersports are included, scuba and spa treatments cost extra, and the free airport transfer applies only to suite-only direct bookings of three nights or more.

Dinner, reservations and the bar

Excellence's signature is walk-in dining: at Punta Cana, Carmen Punta Cana, Riviera Cancun and Oyster Bay no restaurant takes reservations except the teppanyaki table, and that holds at nearly 500 suites. Sandals is property by property. Dunn's River seats every venue without a booking, but Sandals Barbados guests book everything on arrival because walk-up dinner is nearly zero, and Royal Barbados reports waits of 90 minutes or more on peak evenings. On food quality owners split: some rate Sandals better by a long shot, others call the two equal, a few prefer Excellence. The bar is clearer. Sandals trains its bartenders and guests notice the consistency, while Excellence Punta Cana's daytime mixed drinks were noticeably watered down for one couple who switched to beer and wine.

Suites, Excellence Club and Sandals butlers

Excellence is all-suite from the entry level: Riviera Cancun's smallest Junior Suite is 668 square feet, and swim-up and plunge-pool categories are sold without a club upgrade. Excellence Club adds the Magna restaurant, a lounge and bar, a private beach area, a heated club pool and a spa treatment, but it is concierge service, not a butler. Sandals butlers unpack luggage, hold beach chairs and bring food poolside, and at Royal Plantation and Royal Barbados every room has one. Whose rooms are newer depends on which resort. Coral Playa Mujeres opened in 2025 and Sandals Saint Vincent in 2024, and Royal Bahamian redesigned all 404 rooms, while La Toc's base rooms date to a 1973 build and Playa Mujeres is still refreshing suites building by building.

Where they are and what the beaches are like

Excellence is a short-haul chain: three resorts around Cancun, two in Uvero Alto north of Punta Cana and one on a private peninsula near Falmouth, Jamaica, with Riviera Cancun about 20 minutes from the airport. Sandals is spread over eight islands, and Grenada and Saint Vincent usually mean a connection. Sandals got to the best Caribbean sand first: Grande St Lucian and Grande Antigua are regularly called the best beaches in the chain, and Negril sits on Seven Mile Beach. The weak spots are Royal Curacao's marina-side cove, La Toc's yellow-flag swimming and Royal Barbados's south-coast chop. Excellence's Dominican and Riviera Cancun beaches take sargassum from roughly May through October, with 2026 the worst year the region has recorded, so the two Playa Mujeres resorts, sheltered by Isla Mujeres and largely spared, are the ones beach-first travelers pick.

Price, value and the loyalty pull

Sandals costs more, and the Dominican Excellence resorts run below the Mexican ones. Owners who have stayed at both mostly say the premium buys the name: one calls Sandals the Bose speakers of the resort world, another who did Riviera Cancun and Halcyon the same winter says Excellence won at half the cost. Excellence has been raising rates every year, though, and some repeat guests now find it only a little cheaper. Sandals' loyalty machine is part of the price: guests book the next trip in the on-resort loyalty office for a discount, and the sales presentations at Ochi and the hustle some felt at Grande St Lucian come with it. Excellence runs no upsell; its loyalty shows up as Playa Mujeres staff who remember repeat visitors by name.

The Verdict

Excellence is the value pick for most couples who do not need a butler: a bigger suite, walk-in dinners, room service and a stocked bar at the entry rate, for less than any Sandals in the catalogue. Coral Playa Mujeres and Excellence Playa Mujeres are the properties owners rank highest and the ones with reliably clean sand. Sandals is the pick when the trip is about the island and the pampering: couples-only throughout, butlers at the top end, included scuba, and beaches at Grande St Lucian, Grande Antigua and Negril that Excellence cannot match. Among guests who have stayed at both, more switched from Sandals to Excellence than the other way. Anyone set on Sandals Jamaica should look at Dunn's River rather than Ochi, which Sandals regulars avoid; Grenada is the calm one repeaters keep going back to.

Excellence Resorts or Sandals Resorts: Common Questions

Is Sandals worth the extra cost over Excellence?

Owners who have stayed at both mostly say no for a standard room: service, food and entertainment come out about equal, and Excellence includes room service, in-room liquor and walk-in dining that Sandals reserves for higher categories. The premium makes sense when you would use what Sandals adds, namely a butler, daily scuba, or a beach like Grande St Lucian's. One couple priced Sandals Saint Vincent at about $5,000 more than a new Excellence for the same dates and room level.

Does Excellence have butler service?

No. Excellence Club comes with concierges, the Magna restaurant and club bar, a heated club-only pool and a private beach area, but nobody unpacks your bags or holds your chairs. Sandals butlers do exactly that, and at Royal Plantation and Royal Barbados every room has one. Guests who have done both say a butler would not add much at Excellence because the base service already covers most of it.

Is the Excellence Club upgrade worth it?

It depends on the resort. At Oyster Bay honeymooners say yes for the two club restaurants, the extra bar and the quiet club stretch of beach away from the pool music, and a four-time Excellence guest tells everyone to splurge on it. The same honeymooners skipped it at Riviera Cancun and did not miss it, and swim-up suites and room service come without it everywhere. The exception is Coral Playa Mujeres, where club guests call the food fantastic and non-club guests call it decent, so budget for the upgrade there or pick a sister property.

Which chain has the better beach?

Sandals, on average. Grande St Lucian, Grande Antigua and Negril's Seven Mile Beach are sand Excellence does not have, and one agent who books both chains warns that Punta Cana in June means sargassum while Ochi does not. The exceptions matter: Royal Curacao's beach is a cove beside a marina and La Toc flies yellow flags most days. On the Excellence side the two Playa Mujeres resorts are sheltered by Isla Mujeres and are the ones to book for clean sand; Riviera Cancun and the Uvero Alto pair are the gamble.

Is Excellence really as bad as some reviews say?

It depends heavily on which Excellence. The Dominican pair draw the sharpest complaints, with dirty rooms on arrival, a leaking room nobody fixed and a bland, undercooked buffet at Punta Cana, and a Carmen Punta Cana stay abandoned after three days of room changes, while other guests rank Punta Cana among the best of twenty all-inclusives. Guests who have stayed across the chain put Coral Playa Mujeres leagues ahead of the Dominican resorts, and Oyster Bay gets the time-of-my-life reviews, so the safe money goes to Mexico or Jamaica.
