Excellence Resorts vs Secrets Resorts & Spas
These are the two adults-only chains first-timers and honeymooners most often narrow down to, and people who have stayed at both split almost evenly. Excellence is six resorts in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica that score within a hair of each other, sell mostly direct and never pitch a vacation club. Secrets is a Hyatt chain of more than twenty properties holding the best beaches in this comparison alongside its weakest resorts, so the real question is which Secrets.

Where They Differ
How the two chains are built
Excellence is six adults-only resorts: Riviera Cancun, Playa Mujeres and the 2025-opened Coral Playa Mujeres near Cancun, Punta Cana and Carmen in Uvero Alto, and Oyster Bay on its own peninsula in Jamaica. All six sit at 4.8 or 4.9 on Google, so the name tells you most of what you need to know. Secrets is a Hyatt chain with twenty-two open resorts here, spread from the Riviera Maya to Huatulco, Los Cabos, Costa Rica, Aruba and Saint Lucia, and the spread in quality is just as wide: Akumal, Maroma and La Romana at 4.7, Aura Cozumel and Secrets St. Lucia under 4. Travelers who have stayed at both chains keep landing on the same line: you don't judge Secrets as a brand, you judge the particular Secrets.
Price, booking and what the rate includes
Excellence usually comes in lower. Guests who have priced both say Secrets has climbed in recent years; Maroma, Akumal and Cap Cana now sit well above any Excellence, while the newer budget Secrets, Playa Blanca and Tides, land at or below Excellence's Mexico rates. A direct booking is what unlocks Excellence's free round-trip airport transfer: suite-only, three nights or more. Book a flight bundle or go through a third party and the transfer is on you. Secrets also sells through Costco Travel and airline vacation packages, which sometimes bundle transfers, but its base rate rarely includes one. Also: Excellence stocks full bottles in the suite, Secrets minis or beer unless you are Preferred.
Beaches
The axis that settles most of these arguments, and Secrets wins it at the top. Maroma is the beach everyone measures against: calm, clear, a ten against Playa Mujeres' eight to a guest who knows both. Akumal has sea turtles grazing fifty yards off the sand and Cap Cana lets you wade out hip-deep on Juanillo. But Secrets also owns the worst beaches in this matchup: Moxche's is small and sargassum-prone, Tides' is murky and rocky, Puerto Los Cabos isn't swimmable, and Secrets Tulum has no beach, just a shuttle. Excellence beaches are pretty and middling. Playa Mujeres and Coral sit behind Isla Mujeres, which keeps seaweed down, but the water runs murky and the surf rougher than Cap Cana's; Riviera Cancun's is seaweedy; Excellence Punta Cana flies a red flag most days.
Food and getting a table
Both chains run walk-in dinner (Excellence books only its teppanyaki tables), so the difference is the wait. At the busy newer Secrets, dinner runs on a buzzer: 25 to 60 minutes after 7pm at Moxche, up to 90 on some nights at Playa Blanca. Excellence draws few wait complaints and lists more venues, nine to eleven restaurants at every property, where Secrets runs from four at Papagayo to eleven at Moxche. On quality the two camps cancel out: some guests who have done both call Playa Mujeres the best all-inclusive food they have had, others hand it to Maroma and Akumal. The clearer pattern is inside each chain. Excellence's Dominican resorts draw the harshest verdicts; Secrets falls off at outlying properties like Huatulco and Mirabel.
Excellence Club vs Preferred Club
Both sell a resort within the resort; owners' advice splits by property, not brand. At Excellence, most guests who skipped the Club say they never felt it ('stay two extra nights instead'); the exceptions are where it gates a lot. Riviera Cancun puts the Magna restaurant and a private beach and pools behind it, and Coral's Club guests call the food fantastic while everyone else says decent. At Secrets, Preferred matters more often because it holds specific things: the rooftop pool at Moxche and The Vine, the swim-out suites and private beach at Cap Cana, the best buildings at Maroma, which guests call practically required. It is skippable at Akumal ('the Preferred bar is boring') and optional at Playa Blanca; at Tides guests called it not worth the money, though non-Preferred pours were bottom shelf.
Rooms
Excellence's signature room is the two-story rooftop terrace suite with a plunge pool up top, the one repeat guests tell first-timers to book instead of the Club. Every Excellence is all-suite, but Playa Mujeres' swim-up suites walk out onto the shared lazy-river pool; Coral is the one with true swim-outs and private pools. Secrets built its reputation on real swim-out suites at Akumal, Maroma and Cap Cana, and Akumal puts a whirlpool tub for two in every room and passes 24-hour room service through a privacy hatch; Maroma adds overwater bungalows. Age cuts both ways: repeat guests call Playa Mujeres and Riviera Cancun dated, while Secrets Playa Mujeres reopened in January 2026 with every suite redone and Playa Blanca and Tides are both under three years old. Open-plan bathrooms draw privacy complaints at Playa Mujeres and Playa Blanca alike.
Service, energy and the sales pitch
The most repeated reason guests pick Excellence is that nobody tries to sell them a vacation club. Secrets runs the Unlimited Vacation Club, and the pitch comes at check-in or as a 'breakfast meeting'; you are asked once and a firm no mostly ends it, though The Vine, Huatulco, Vallarta Bay and Bahia Mita draw the most complaints. Service is Excellence's other calling card: housekeeping 'ninjas', waiters who improvise a menu for you, staff who remember names visit after visit, Oyster Bay excepted as competent rather than warm. Secrets matches that at Akumal and reads as corporate at Cap Cana. On energy, Excellence is consistently mid: lights out by 11, no club. Secrets runs from dead quiet at Maroma, Cap Cana and Playa Blanca to a password nightclub at Moxche, so pick by property.
The Verdict
If the beach is what you will remember, pick the Secrets with the beach you want, Maroma for calm water, Akumal for turtles, Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic, and budget for Preferred Club where it is gated. If you want the trip to be easy and the bill lower, pick Excellence: six resorts that score within a hair of each other, walk-in dinners with no buzzer, a free transfer when you book direct, and no one selling you a vacation club. First-timers get steered to Excellence Playa Mujeres more than any other property in this matchup for exactly that reason. The honest tiebreaker: guests who have done both most often rank Maroma and Akumal above any Excellence, and put Excellence's Mexico trio above most of the rest of the Secrets list.

Excellence Resorts or Secrets Resorts & Spas: Common Questions
Is Excellence Club or Preferred Club worth it?
At Excellence, most guests who skipped the Club say they never missed it, and the common advice is to put the money into a rooftop terrace or swim-up suite or an extra night; the exception is Coral, where Club guests rate the food a tier higher. At Secrets it depends on the property: Preferred is close to mandatory at Maroma and Cap Cana and unlocks the rooftop pool at Moxche and The Vine, but guests call it unnecessary at Akumal and Tides and optional at Playa Blanca.
Which has better food, Excellence or Secrets?
Guests who have stayed at both split down the middle, which is the honest answer. Excellence Playa Mujeres and Riviera Cancun get 'the best all-inclusive food they have had' from some, and Maroma and Akumal get the same from others; Excellence lists more restaurants per resort, Secrets has fewer but its flagships cook well. The reliable pattern is the weak spots inside each chain: Excellence's Dominican resorts draw the most food complaints, and Secrets' quality drops at outlying properties like Huatulco and Mirabel.
Does Secrets push a timeshare presentation? Does Excellence?
Yes and no, in that order. Secrets resorts sell the Unlimited Vacation Club, and guests describe being asked at check-in or invited to a 'breakfast meeting', with The Vine, Huatulco, Vallarta Bay and Bahia Mita drawing the most complaints; a firm no usually ends it after one ask. Excellence does not run a vacation club, and that is the most-cited reason its repeat guests stay loyal.
Are airport transfers included at Excellence and Secrets?
Excellence includes round-trip transfers on suite-only stays of three nights or more booked directly with the resort; book through an agency or as a flight package and you pay the resort's transfer partner yourself, which trips up a lot of first-timers. Secrets usually does not include transfers in the base rate (Akumal doesn't, and Playa Esmeralda in Miches is a long paid ride from Punta Cana), though airline vacation packages sometimes bundle them, and on the Riviera Maya guests recommend pre-booking a private transfer company.
Which is closer to the airport, and which is better for excursions?
Excellence Riviera Cancun is about 20 minutes from Cancun airport (only Secrets Riviera Cancun, at 15, is closer) and Playa Mujeres 30 to 45, but Playa Mujeres is a full day trip from Tulum and the cenotes. Secrets Akumal is 65 to 90 minutes from Cancun, or 30 to 45 from Tulum's airport if your airline flies there, and Akumal, Moxche and Maroma put the ruins, cenotes and the Cozumel ferry within easy reach. In the Dominican Republic both chains are remote: Excellence sits in Uvero Alto about 45 minutes north of the airport with nothing walkable, and Secrets Playa Esmeralda is 1.5 to 2 hours away in Miches.
