Deep-sea fishing charter

Day trip · The Bahamas, Bahamas

Anglers fly out to San Salvador for wahoo. The run starts in the fall and peaks through the winter, when boats often get several bites a day from fish averaging around 50 pounds and now and then one near 100. Billfish are caught here too, along the stretch from Sandy Point round the south-east corner and out towards Rum Cay.

Deep water is close at hand: the shelf around the island is only 400 to 1,500 metres wide, and past the edge the bottom falls almost straight down to around 4,000 metres. Boats work out of Riding Rock Marina near Cockburn Town, a full-service marina, and the charter boat there runs half and full days. The west coast is the sheltered side, with calmer water; the east faces the open Atlantic.
