Bonefishing trip

Day trip · The Bahamas, Bahamas

Andros has more bonefish water than anyone can fish: thousands of square kilometres of shallow flats, creeks and mangrove channels, with hardly another boat in sight. Bonefish, nicknamed grey ghosts, are skittish silver fish that come up onto the flats with the rising tide to root for crabs and shrimp. You stand on a skiff while the guide poles it along and calls the fish, "30 yards at 12 o'clock", and you have a second or two to make the cast.

Trips run as half or full days, two anglers to a boat with a guide, and tackle is supplied, along with lunch on the full day. Fresh Creek, a waterway about 20 miles long, is the usual nearby ground, and the guides grew up fishing these flats and will teach beginners on spinning gear as well as fly anglers. Times shift with the tide and the weather. Bonefishing is catch and release.

Wear light long trousers and a long-sleeved top, a lined hat and polarised sunglasses, and bring reef-safe sunscreen and non-toxic bug spray. Permit and tarpon share the same flats.
