Evening show and dinner at Las Caletas

Day trip · Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Rhythms of the Night is the after-dark use of Las Caletas, the cove south of the bay where John Huston spent his last years. A catamaran leaves Puerto Vallarta in the late afternoon and crosses Banderas Bay as the sun goes down (from December to March there may be humpbacks on the way). At the cove the paths are lit by candles, dinner is served first, and then the audience walks into the jungle to an open-air amphitheatre for ALMA, a show of music, movement and storytelling built on Mexican myth. The ride home is a party, with music on deck.

All told it runs about five hours. Wine and drinks come with every tier; the top tier swaps the standard dinner for a menu by Paco Ruano, chef of the Michelin-starred Alcalde. The minimum age is 6, and the uneven paths make it a poor choice for anyone with limited mobility. Wear flat shoes, take bug spray in summer and a sweater in winter, and carry cash for the dock fee collected at check-in.
