Gran Cenote

Gran Cenote is where cave divers began mapping Sac Actun, one of the longest underwater cave systems on Earth, and it is still the easiest place to see a piece of it. Wooden platforms lead down to open-air pools joined by stretches under a rock ceiling hung with stalactites and columns. The water is clear and shallow enough that snorkellers see the formations without scuba, and fish, iguanas and birds are around.

Certified divers can go into the cavern with a guide, at around 10 metres. It is one of the busiest cenotes in the area, so timing matters, and it suits groups where some dive and some only snorkel. Life vests, fins and masks cost extra, and entry is cash only. Keep sunscreen out of the water and do not touch the rock. It is about 7 km out of town on the road to Cobá.
