Whale and dolphin watching

Day trip · St. Lucia, Saint Lucia

Deep water runs close to St Lucia's shore, so whales and dolphins are often met within sight of the coast rather than far out to sea. Spinner dolphins, often in big leaping groups, and pantropical spotted dolphins are the most likely sightings, along with bottlenose. Pods of pilot whales live here all year, and sperm whales are resident too, though seen less often in the deeper water. Humpbacks pass through between February and April, and Fraser's, Risso's and striped dolphins turn up now and then.

The sea is usually calmest from December to May. Nothing is guaranteed, since sightings depend on the weather and where the animals are moving. Licensed boats keep their distance and limit how long they stay with a pod.
