Samsara Cliffs Resort is one of those places that earns a loyal following precisely because it ignores most trends in modern resort design. Perched on the limestone cliffs of Negril's West End, the 70-room hotel runs on a simple formula: warm Jamaican hospitality, jaw-dropping ocean access and a relaxed, family-run feel. Jumping into the turquoise water, snorkeling the reef along the rock face and watching the sun drop into the sea from the terrace are what guests remember years later. The resort closed when Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica as a category 5 storm on 28 October 2025, and its own update now says Samsara and sister hotel Legends Beach Resort are fully open and operating normally.

Traveler Insights(312 discussions)

Pros

  • +Dramatic cliffside setting on Negril's West End with ladders and steps cut into the rock straight down into the Caribbean, a genuinely different way to swim
  • +Cliff jumping from ledges at several heights, so you can slip in near the waterline or work up to the higher spots
  • +The reef runs right in front of the cliffs, so snorkeling needs no boat trip; just bring your own mask and fins
  • +Free shuttle to sister property Legends Beach Resort on Seven Mile Beach at 10am with a 4pm return, plus Tuesday and Friday dinner runs and informal lifts whenever staff are driving anyway

Cons

  • −No sand beach on the property; the beach is at Legends, a shuttle or taxi ride away along Seven Mile Beach
  • −Standard rooms have no fridge, hairdryer or iron; hairdryers and irons are loaned from the front desk and fridges rent for $12 a day, and only the Garden Side Junior Suites, Pillar Houses and Ocean View Family Villa come with fridges and coffee makers
  • −No shampoo, conditioner or body lotion in the bathrooms, so pack your own toiletries and a beach towel
  • −The all-inclusive plan leaves out snacks, lobster, shrimp, steak, bottled beer, bottled sodas, bottled water, wine and premium spirits, and meals run in fixed windows that close at 9pm

The all-inclusive plan is optional and covers breakfast, lunch and dinner plus local spirits, draught Red Stripe, draught sodas and juices from 10am to 10pm, with exchange privileges at Legends. Meals are usually buffet, sometimes a la carte in low season, at the Samsara Seaside Restaurant, with Chez Maurice for oceanfront a la carte dinners and the Oceanfront Bar open 10am to 10pm. Ciao Jamaica, the Italian restaurant, is temporarily closed as of October 2026. Rooms have air conditioning, ceiling fans, flat-screen TVs and verandas with hammocks, but the extras most resorts take for granted, such as fridges, toiletries and beach towels, are either rentable or bring-your-own. Snorkel gear is no longer provided free, so pack a mask (prescription lenses if you wear glasses) or rent one in town. There are swimming pools, a tennis court where you bring your own racquets, billiards and table tennis.

Samsara suits independent travelers, couples and families who want Jamaican character over polish, and adventurous guests who will actually use the cliffs and the reef. It is a much smaller and simpler product than the big Seven Mile Beach all-inclusives, and pricing reflects that, though the resort's published rate chart is several seasons old, so check current rates directly. If a sandy beach out the door, swim-up bars and nightly shows are dealbreakers, look elsewhere. Fly into Montego Bay, not Kingston; the resort is emphatic about it, and from there Rick's Cafe, catamaran cruises and parasailing are all easy to arrange.

Common Questions

Is cliff jumping safe at Samsara?
There are entry points at different heights, from just above the waterline to higher ledges, but the resort is clear that jumping, diving and swimming off the cliffs is at your own risk and there is no lifeguard on duty. Children must be supervised near the cliffs, and nobody should go in when the rough-sea signs are out. Stay clear of the cliff walls, where sea urchins live, and start low if you are nervous.
How does the shuttle to Legends Beach Resort work?
The free shuttle leaves Samsara for Legends at 10am and comes back from Legends at 4pm daily. Dinner shuttles run from Samsara on Tuesday and Friday at 6:30pm, returning at 9pm, and from Legends to Samsara on Thursday and Sunday at 6pm. Staff also give lifts when they are already making the trip, and licensed taxis with red plates fill the gaps.
Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?
Yes. Samsara and Legends no longer provide complimentary snorkel equipment and ask guests to bring, buy or rent their own. The reef right off the cliffs is still one of the best reasons to stay here. If you wear glasses, the resort suggests getting a prescription mask from a dive shop before you travel.
What is and is not included in the all-inclusive plan?
It covers three meals a day and unlimited domestic drinks from 10am to 10pm, including draught Red Stripe, pina coladas, daiquiris and rum, vodka or gin cocktails, plus meal and drink exchange at Legends. Snacks, lobster, shrimp, steak, bottled beer, bottled sodas, bottled water, wine and premium spirits cost extra, and so do meals at Ciao Jamaica. Room-only rates are also available if you would rather eat around Negril.
What should I pack that other resorts would supply?
Shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and a beach towel, since bathrooms come with soap and bath towels only. Bring tennis racquets and balls if you plan to play, and snorkel gear. If you want a fridge in a standard room, reserve one ahead for $12 a day, because supply is first come, first served.
How does Samsara compare with the big Seven Mile Beach all-inclusives?
It is a fundamentally different product: smaller, more local in character and built around the cliffs rather than a beach. You give up sand out the door, a long list of restaurants and polished amenities, and gain the cliff swimming, the reef and a more personal feel. Travelers who have done both often say Samsara feels more like Jamaica, while the big resorts are more comfortable and predictable.
