Traveler Insights(128 discussions)
Dreams Dominicus La Romana has a loyal following in traveler forums for a simple reason: Bayahibe faces the Caribbean, so the water is calm, clear and largely free of the sargassum that hits the Atlantic-facing Punta Cana beaches, and the 488-room resort is small enough to walk end to end. Travel agents routinely name it as a starting point for families, and the Preferred Club tier here is unusually concrete, with its own restaurant (Flying Fish), its own pizzeria, the Marlin pool bar in the Preferred Club Family Suites section and a beach lounge. The swim-up rooms take children, which most Dominican resorts reserve for adults.
Dining is a la carte with no reservations required. Bordeaux (French, adults only), Himitsu (Pan-Asian), Portofino (Italian), Seaside Grill, Barefoot Grill, La Trattoria, the World Cafe buffet and the 24-hour Coco Cafe cover the week, and Hyatt's Sip, Savor and See programme adds the restaurants of nearby participating resorts from 6pm to 1am through the concierge. Guests in September 2026 praised the variety and quality of the food and drink and a June 2026 guest named the French restaurant their favourite, though a May 2026 guest marked the resort down for poor food choices, and WestJet's fact sheet marks Seaside Grill with a surcharge that Air Canada Vacations does not show. Kids get the Explorer's Club (ages 3 to 12, with science and nature programming, sandcastle competitions and beach movies) and teens The Core Zone (13 to 17, with video games, air hockey, foosball and weekly bonfires). The spa runs to more than 10,000 square feet with hydrotherapy.
Two cautions. First, this is not the Dreams in Bayahibe with the water park: that is Dreams La Romana, the former Hilton La Romana Family Resort, a separate hotel with 418 rooms, slides and a lazy river, and nothing of the kind exists at Dreams Dominicus. Second, the transfer is shorter than the longer figures sometimes quoted: Punta Cana airport is 71 km and Sunwing publishes it as 45 minutes, while La Romana airport is 19 km, roughly 20 minutes, if your airline flies there. Iberostar Selection Hacienda Dominicus next door is the usual comparison, and guests who have done both tend to give Iberostar the edge on grounds and service consistency while Dreams wins on the swim-up rooms, the Preferred Club extras and no-reservation dining. Best for families and couples who want calm water and a walkable resort rather than a Bavaro mega-complex.
Pros
- +Bayahibe faces the Caribbean on the Dominican south coast rather than the open Atlantic, so the water off the resort is calm and clear and sargassum is far less of a problem than on the Punta Cana and Bavaro beaches. Snorkeling right off the beach is included, and the Explorer's Club runs movies on the sand
- +Dinner is a la carte with no reservations required, which is still unusual. The line-up is Bordeaux (French, adults only), Himitsu (Pan-Asian), Portofino (Italian), Seaside Grill, Barefoot Grill and La Trattoria for casual pizza and grill food, the World Cafe buffet and the 24-hour Coco Cafe. A September 2026 guest singled out the variety and quality of food and drink, and a June 2026 guest called the French restaurant their favourite by far
- +Preferred Club buys real, separate things here rather than just a wristband colour: the Flying Fish restaurant and a Pizzeria open only to Preferred guests, the Marlin pool bar in the Preferred Club Family Suites section, a beach lounge with its own bar, continental breakfast and afternoon hors d'oeuvres in the lounge, and the better room positions
- +The swim-up rooms take children. The Preferred Club Deluxe Swim Up categories sleep up to four with up to two kids, so a family can book direct pool access instead of watching an adults-only swim-up wing from the other side of a hedge
- +At 488 rooms it is mid-sized by Dominican standards, much smaller than the 1,000-room-plus Punta Cana complexes, and the whole property is walkable. Sunwing describes it as an intimate beachfront resort with a family-oriented section, and no wristbands are worn
- +The transfer is shorter than people assume. Punta Cana airport is 71 km away, which Sunwing publishes as a 45-minute transfer, and La Romana airport is 19 km, about 20 minutes. Round-trip transfers are included in Canadian package rates
- +Hyatt's Sip, Savor and See programme lets guests eat and drink at nearby participating Hyatt Inclusive Collection resorts from 6pm to 1am, booked through the concierge, which stretches the dining variety well beyond the 488-room footprint. Repeat visitors are a recurring theme in traveler forums
Cons
- −Do not confuse it with Dreams La Romana, a different Bayahibe hotel (the former Hilton La Romana Family Resort, 418 rooms) that is the one with the water park, slides and lazy river. Dreams Dominicus has no lazy river, water park or slides in any operator fact sheet; the pools are an oceanfront infinity pool with the Manatees swim-up bar, a kids' pool, a relax pool with cabanas and the Preferred Club pool
- −The tour operators cannot agree on how big the place is: WestJet publishes 6 pools, 10 restaurants and 8 bars, Air Canada Vacations 4 pools, 10 restaurants and 8 bars, and Sunwing 4 pools, 11 restaurants and 7 bars. Count venues you care about by name, not by total
- −Seaside Grill is marked with a surcharge on WestJet's fact sheet but listed as a standard a la carte by Air Canada Vacations. Ask at check-in before you plan a steak night around it
- −Food is the one thing guests split on. The 2026 praise is real, but a May 2026 guest marked the resort down for poor food choices
- −Preferred Club is only worth it if you can use it. One 2026 guest paid the premium and said they were unable to enjoy most of the included services because they could not get hold of the concierge. Make the concierge earn the premium on day one
- −No casino on the property. Sunwing lists a casino nearby at extra cost, and Air Canada Vacations puts Casino Dominicus 0.8 km away, which is a walk or a short taxi rather than a lobby door
- −Bayahibe is a fishing village, not a resort strip. Off-resort evenings mean Bayahibe town or a taxi; the on-site nightlife is the Desires Music Lounge with a dance floor, the nightly show, beach movies and theme parties. Excursions are mostly boat trips to Saona Island and Catalina Island
