Bahia Principe Explore Punta Cana is the biggest thing Bahia Principe operates in the Dominican Republic, and its recent history explains most of what you will read about it. On November 1, 2024 the chain folded the neighbouring Grand Bavaro into Grand Punta Cana to make one 1,428-room hotel, then retired the Grand, Luxury, Sunlight and Fantasia tiers in a March 2026 brand restructure that split the portfolio into Explore for families and Escape for adults 18 and over. This property came out of that as an Explore hotel selling inside Hyatt's Inclusive Collection. Older reviews comparing "Grand Bavaro" to "Grand Punta Cana" are comparing it to itself.
The practical experience in late 2026 is a large family resort in the middle of its own refurbishment. Work runs April 10 to November 30, 2026 with the hotel open throughout, and as of October 2026 the theatre, the Bouganville buffet, the Mai Tai lobby bar, Il Capriccio, Maiko, Flamboyan and the Tropicana terrace bar are closed for it, with shows relocated to a terrace. What is already finished is the better half of the story: the Privilege Lounge has reopened renovated, the old Garden Grill is now the Flame steakhouse, Mikado has become Nomad doing Mongolian, Orquidea is the Nacar buffet, and the deluxe junior suites the brand site shows have been redone with new decor. Six pools, a children's pool, a water park, the La Isla food court, a spa and a gym round it out, and the beach is genuine Bavaro sand even if there is not much of it per guest.
This is the pick for a family that wants a lot of resort for not much money on a good beach, and is willing to trade intimacy and a finished property for the price. Junior suites were listing from about $209 per room per night in October 2026 and OTA averages sit near $190, which puts it well under Royalton Bavaro, Dreams Royal Beach or anything in the Paradisus and Excellence bracket. If you want polish, quiet or a short airport transfer, pay up for one of those instead, and if you are booking before December 2026 assume at least one venue you wanted will be behind fencing.
Pros
- +Direct access to Bavaro Beach in the Arena Gorda / Macao stretch, one of the widest white-sand sections in Punta Cana
- +Six pools spread across the grounds, including a children's pool and a small water park, so you can usually find a quiet one even at full occupancy
- +La Isla food and entertainment hub anchors the resort with food trucks, international counters, play areas and a kids club in one place
- +Dining runs wide for an all-inclusive at this price: Nacar buffet, Las Olas beach restaurant and Brazilian rodizio, Flame steakhouse, Nomad Mongolian, Fish Market, Thali Indian, The Greek and Tequila Mexican all open as of October 2026
- +Fish Market, the seafood restaurant, is adults 18 and over, which is a rare bit of grown-up space inside a family resort
- +One of the cheapest large all-inclusives in Punta Cana, with junior suites listed from about $209 per room per night on the brand site in October 2026
- +Sells inside Hyatt's Inclusive Collection since the Grupo Pinero and Hyatt joint venture, so World of Hyatt members earn and redeem here
- +Bahia Principe Village sits a few minutes away with shops, bars and nightlife, an internal shuttle runs the grounds, and guests get some access to the facilities of the neighbouring Bahia Principe hotels in the same complex
Cons
- −The hotel's own renovation runs April 10 through November 30, 2026, and the theatre, the Bouganville buffet, the Mai Tai lobby bar, Il Capriccio, Maiko, Flamboyan and the Tropicana terrace bar are all out of service while it finishes
- −With the theatre closed, 2026 guests report evening shows moved to a terrace with limited seating, so arrive early if you care about the entertainment
- −At 1,428 rooms this is one of the largest hotels in Punta Cana, and guests in 2026 say the beach frontage feels small for the number of people using it
- −A property this size is impersonal by design: long walks between buildings, queues at the buffet at peak hours, and staff who cannot learn your name in a week
- −The Mini Club covers ages 4 to 12, so families with toddlers under 4 have no structured program to hand them off to
- −The casino at Pueblo Principe Village and the Punta Blanca Golf Course are nearby complex and partner facilities at extra charge, not included in the all-inclusive
- −It is 25 km from Punta Cana airport, which is a longer shared-shuttle ride than the Cap Cana and Punta Cana village resorts
