Jewel Runaway Bay Beach Resort and Waterpark built a solid reputation as one of the better family all-inclusive options in Jamaica during its operating years. The 266-room resort stretched across 20 acres in Runaway Bay - a quieter, more authentically Jamaican town than the tourist-dense Montego Bay strip - and used that space to build something with genuine variety. The waterpark was the headline feature: slides, a lazy river, and a kids play palace gave families a park day folded into the resort experience without paying extra. Three pools, beach access, trapeze, laser tag, and live reggae rounded out an activity menu that kept guests busy for a full week without repetition. The resort has permanently closed. The property was sold to Sandals Resorts International, the former Jewel site now sits vacant, and it is being redeveloped as Beaches Runaway Bay, a new-build Sandals family-brand property that chairman Adam Stewart says will open at the back end of 2026.

The dining program was better than the resort's mid-tier pricing suggested. Beyond the standard international buffet, a teppanyaki grill and sushi restaurant gave families with adventurous eaters genuine options. Quality liquor was included in the rate, which guests frequently mentioned as a positive against the well-only approach at comparable price points. The Radiant Spa was a genuine amenity rather than a token listing - travelers who used it reported solid service and a peaceful contrast to the resort's busier family energy. Service and room quality were the most variable elements: the resort's 2018 TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice recognition reflected its popularity at the time, but aging infrastructure and inconsistent execution were consistent notes in later reviews.

Jewel Runaway Bay was best for families with children who wanted waterpark access, variety, and a Jamaican atmosphere outside the Montego Bay bubble. It competed most directly with Iberostar Selection Breezes and Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall for the family all-inclusive dollar, generally coming in at a lower price point than both. The Runaway Bay location sits midway between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, making day trips to Dunn's River Falls, Green Grotto Caves, and Nine Mile straightforward. The Beaches Runaway Bay property that will replace it is planned at roughly 400-450 suites and promises a signature waterpark, a Greg Norman-designed championship golf course, wellness areas, bike trails, and even a treehouse and skateboarding - a substantial step up from what Jewel delivered.

Pros

  • +Jewel Lagoon Waterpark with waterslides, a lazy river, and a kids play palace gave families a genuine theme-park-adjacent experience included in the all-inclusive rate
  • +Twenty acres of property gave the resort a spacious, uncrowded feel even at peak capacity - guests rarely felt packed in
  • +Three distinct pool areas plus a private beach meant families could spread out and find their preferred pace across the property
  • +Strong activity lineup including beachside trapeze, laser tag, beach volleyball, and live reggae - enough to fill every day without repeating
  • +Dining variety that went well beyond the typical buffet-heavy model: teppanyaki grill, sushi restaurant, and international options rounded out a stronger-than-average food program
  • +Radiant Spa offered a genuine wellness option in a family resort where spa amenities are often treated as an afterthought
  • +Midpoint location between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios made day trips in either direction straightforward without long drives
  • +Quality liquor brands included in the all-inclusive rate - a consistent positive note from guests who had been burned by well-only policies at other resorts

Cons

  • Food quality opinions split sharply, with some guests calling it the best they'd had at any resort and others finding it disappointing relative to the room rate
  • Room quality had a wide variance across the property - some renovated rooms received strong marks while others showed significant wear
  • Service could be inconsistent, particularly at bars and restaurants during peak meal times when staff appeared stretched thin
  • The waterpark, while popular with kids, was smaller and less impressive than dedicated waterpark resorts - families with thrill-seeking teenagers sometimes found it underwhelming
  • The beach, while pleasant, was narrower than guests who researched Runaway Bay often expected based on promotional photography
  • The property is permanently closed - it was sold to Sandals Resorts International, the site is being redeveloped, and it will not reopen under the Jewel brand
  • Runaway Bay's quieter, off-strip location cut both ways - nightlife and off-resort dining options were limited, and Montego Bay's airport was about an hour's drive away
  • Direct competitors outclassed it on specific dimensions - Iberostar Selection Breezes had the better beach and Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall the better rooms and dining - leaving Jewel to compete mainly on price and the waterpark

I did not see rooms as I did not stay overnight. I went in for the day to access the water park. This was one of my highlights on my vacation in Jamaica. I stayed with family, which is why the additional pressures of not having to rent a room just to...

Just got back from a fantastic trip. The resort is small enough that you can find your way around easily, but large enough that you have variety. First there is Janice, the best bartender I have ever met, make sure you tell her I say “hello” and try...
