Sac Actun Cenote

The draw here is Pet Cemetery, a cavern cenote with low, delicate stalactites hanging close to the water. It is part of Sac Actun, one of the longest underwater cave systems known, which since 2018 has been counted together with Dos Ojos. The same system holds the bones of a mastodon and of a young woman that may be among the oldest human remains in the Americas, though those lie far deeper, where only cave divers go.

The visit is a snorkel or a guided cavern or cave dive, reached by a dirt track through the forest west of the highway.
