Traveler Insights(1,100 discussions)
Planet Hollywood Cancun knows exactly what it wants to be: an entertainment-forward, pop-culture themed family resort that delivers an experience-dense vacation rather than a luxurious one. Despite the name it sits in Costa Mujeres on the Punta Sam road, in Isla Mujeres municipality north of the city, about 45 minutes from the airport by the resort's reckoning and a similar drive from the Hotel Zone. It is big, at 648 suites, and it is now styled Planet Hollywood Cancun by Royalton after Blue Diamond Resorts rebranded as Royalton Hotels and Resorts in August 2025, while staying an Autograph Collection hotel inside Marriott Bonvoy. The FlowRider, the lazy river, the Jurassic Splash Park and Shipwreck Cove, Planet Play's trampolines and arcade and a Brazilian churrascaria combine into something families with teenagers and activity-hungry groups genuinely love.
The dining is the gap that keeps it from competing with properties at similar prices that cook better. Traveler forums describe most of the eleven restaurants as adequate all-inclusive fare, with Brazza Grill the one consistent standout and the Chef's Table a surcharge. Guests expecting Moon Palace or Royalton Riviera Cancun food will be disappointed; guests who treat food as fuel and come for the attractions have a much better time. Two practical notes for anyone booking now: the Jurassic Splash Park and Shipwreck Cove were shut for unscheduled maintenance in spring 2026, with the closure extended to June 15, 2026, and the resort's page carried no works notice in October 2026; and WestJet Vacations' fact sheet marks the FlowRider, Planet Play, the karts and cabanas as extra-cost, so ask what your rate includes. STAR Class, with its butler, Green Room Lounge and private beach and pool areas, is the real service upgrade, and the PH Spa and PUMPED fitness center with instructor-led classes are solid for the adults.
It suits families with children roughly 8 to 16, groups of friends who want shared activity-driven days, and Bonvoy members who want an all-inclusive that earns points. It is actively misaligned with honeymooners, couples seeking quiet and food-first travelers; the adults-only Adult Scene next door, or Royalton CHIC, Breathless and Le Blanc elsewhere around Cancun, serve those travelers better. Day trips are the usual Cancun set: Isla Mujeres by ferry from nearby Punta Sam, cenote swims, and long days to Tulum or Chichen Itza.
Pros
- +The FlowRider surf simulator is a genuinely rare on-property draw that teenagers and competitive adults talk about long after the trip, and the resort pairs it with a labyrinth maze and a nine-hole mini-golf course
- +Serious water infrastructure for a family resort: a lazy river with the Blue Lagoon grotto swim-up bar on it, the Jurassic Splash Park and Shipwreck Cove with slides and sprinklers, four outdoor pools with ocean views and a separate children's pool
- +Planet Play is an indoor rainy-day answer most Cancun-area resorts lack: trampoline zones, basketball courts, golf simulators and arcade games, plus a movie theater showing family favorites
- +Eleven restaurants by the resort's own count, with real range: Brazza Grill (Brazilian churrasco, the one traveler forums rate highest), Sunset Strip Steakhouse, East Sushi and Teppanyaki, Sutra (Indian, with a hookah lounge), Gusto Italian Trattoria, La Cocina (Mexican), The Shores beach club for lunch, Catch, Guy's Burger Joint, the SoCal Gourmet Emporium buffet and the 6th Sense Chef's Table
- +STAR Class is a meaningful upgrade rather than a sticker: a Personal Agent butler, the Green Room Lounge with premium spirits, private beach and pool areas with their own bar and grill, preferred suite locations, a pillow menu, priority restaurant reservations and early check-in and late check-out when available
- +It is an Autograph Collection hotel, so Marriott Bonvoy members earn and redeem points and carry elite benefits into an all-inclusive stay
- +Costa Mujeres, north of Cancun on the Punta Sam road, gives you a calmer, less built-up beach than the Hotel Zone strip, 45 minutes from the airport by the resort's own estimate
- +The STARS Kids Club takes ages 4 to 12 with supervised art, gym time, dance parties, themed events and weekly awards ceremonies, and the PH Spa adds hydrotherapy, a Himalayan salt room, Ayurveda treatments and couples' suites for the parents
Cons
- −Food across most outlets reads on traveler forums as adequate rather than exciting, with Brazza Grill the consistent exception; the 6th Sense Chef's Table carries a surcharge and requires reservations
- −Several headline attractions are flagged as extra-cost on WestJet Vacations' fact sheet: FlowRider sessions, Planet Play, the Hollywood Fast Drivers karts and poolside cabanas. The resort's own page does not say either way, so confirm before you promise them to the kids
- −A poor fit for honeymooners and couples after romance; the entertainment-forward, family identity dominates, and the adults-only Planet Hollywood Adult Scene next door is sold as a separate hotel
- −STAR Class creates a visible two-tier resort, with its own beach and pool areas, lounge, bar and grill and pool bar that regular guests walk past
- −Pricing sits at the premium end of Costa Mujeres for what is an entertainment product rather than a luxury one, and the value case depends on how many of the attractions your group will actually use
- −Timeshare and vacation-club presentations come up repeatedly in guest accounts as pushy, including during check-in
- −Peak-season crowds strain pool-chair availability and specialty-restaurant reservations, and service gets uneven when the resort is full, with some staff praised by name and other departments drawing complaints
