Allegro Playacar - All Inclusive
Allegro Playacar is the answer when someone wants the Playacar address without the Playacar price. It is a four-star Barcelo property on Chac Halal beach inside the same gated development as Royal Hideaway, built as two-story palapa-roofed villas rather than a tower, with 286 rooms, a Kids Club and an open-air theater. Nobody books it for luxury. People book it because it is cheap, it is genuinely on a good beach, and it leaves money for the things the Riviera Maya does better than any resort buffet.

There is no room service, the wellness offering is a massage center rather than a spa and it is adults only at 18, and the pool count is unclear enough that Barcelo publishes two different numbers on the same page. What does work: free Wi-Fi, an air-conditioned gym, two floodlit tennis courts, a basketball court, snorkeling, 24-hour snacks, and a beach that regulars rate above the public stretches in town. Standard rooms are small at 24 square meters, and the family categories at 48 square meters are worth the upgrade if there are more than two of you.
The location is the part most listings get wrong. Fifth Avenue is not a 15-minute stroll from here: Barcelo puts it at 2.1 miles, about 3.4 kilometers, which is a taxi or a colectivo rather than a walk after dinner. That is still close enough to make eating in town a real option several nights a week, and it is why the resort suits budget-minded couples, groups of friends and families who plan to be out exploring Cozumel, the cenotes, Xcaret and Tulum instead of parked at the pool. If your budget reaches Royal Hideaway next door, take it. If it does not, Allegro is honest about what it is.
